Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments: Which One Is Right for You?

Patients who want to address various age-related skin conditions, from wrinkles to age spots to uneven texture, don’t necessarily need facial plastic surgery. But knowing which nonsurgical cosmetic treatment is best for their specific concerns isn’t easy. At our medical spa in London, Ontario, we often see patients who want to know if they’re good candidates for chemical peels or laser skin treatments.

Both are skin resurfacing procedures that reveal smoother, healthier-looking skin by removing damaged areas. Both treatment techniques have benefits, but knowing which one is right for you can be a bit confusing if you’re seeking treatment for the first time. In this blog post, I’ll explain the advantages of each technique, how they work, and the skin conditions that each procedure treats.

What’s the Difference Between Peels and Laser Treatments?

The primary difference between the two techniques is how they work. Chemical peels use different strengths of acid solutions applied to the skin’s surface. The strength of the solution depends on the condition of the patient’s skin and the patient’s cosmetic goals.

If you research chemical peels online, you’ll learn that there are 3 general categories of peels: superficial, medium, and deep. At our med spa, we focus on customizing mild to moderate peels to address specific skin conditions. Our MicroPeel Plus, for example, uses alpha hydroxy acid to treat early signs of aging, pigmentation, and mild skin imperfections.

Fractional laser skin resurfacing treatments create tiny columns of damaged tissue without damaging the surrounding skin, which is why they require much less downtime than ablative lasers. Ablative lasers remove the skin’s outer surface, and the aggressive nature of the treatment requires a longer recovery.

Our menu of options also includes intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments, which use light energy to treat skin conditions associated with aging and sun damage, such as redness, brown spots, and spider veins.

One of our most popular treatments, the Carbon Spectra Peel, combines laser energy with a layer of carbon lotion applied to the skin. Sometimes called the “Hollywood Peel” because of its popularity among celebrities, the carbon peel is really for anyone who wants to reduce pigmentation, blemishes, and have skin that feels and looks younger and more radiant.

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

It really depends on several factors, including your skin type and the nature of your primary skin concerns. One of the reasons so many women and men choose DermEffects for skin rejuvenation is because of our extensive menu of treatments. We don’t need to take a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment and can customize peels and laser procedures based on your specific needs.

The good news is that both chemical peels and laser skin treatments result in skin that looks more radiant and refreshed. It’s also important to maintain your results with daily skin care using professional-grade products.
